"Tailgating" as a security breach

In a recent survey, more than 70% of respondents said it was likely a security breach could occur at their facility as a result of “tailgating,” the practice of following an authorized person into a restricted area or past a certain checkpoint. (This is also sometimes referred to as “piggybacking.”)

Despite the perceived risk, a slightly higher percentage said they answered “no” when asked if their facility regularly tracks tailgating occurrences. This may be because around 60% of respondents said they already have taken steps to minimize tailgating by providing a physical barrier at their entrances and by educating their employees.

This tailgating survey was conducted in September and October 2014 by Boon Edam Inc. of Lillington, North Carolina, a manufacturer of security entrances. Their results were reported last week on SecurityMagazine.com.
