How to prevent violence in the workplace

Recently we came across a document from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (courtesy of Doug Pesce, an ASIS International colleague) that explains how to recognize and respond to warning signs in the workplace that someone may be on a “pathway to violence.”

Such signs of trouble, while describing those of work colleagues, also apply to other people we encounter regularly. These include frequent visitors to our places of employment and, especially, friends and relatives. It’s worth noting that domestic incidents commonly escalate into active shooter situations. That is one reason why signing in and badging visitors is so important; it can head off trouble before it starts.

Let’s look out for one another by taking notice of everyone’s behavior, especially when it’s unusually destructive and repeated. For more guidance, click on the image below to access this document in PDF form.
